2nd XI Match Report Away vs Galgate 13th July 2019

The seconds travelled far south today for an away day at second-placed Galgate, and boy was it worth the journey in an absolutely stunning game of cricket that ended in a Silverdale victory in a game that saw 526 runs scored.

The trend of us losing the toss continued and Galgate elected to bat on a gloriously sunny day, presumably expecting to rack up 200 plus and skittle us. We had other ideas. Alfie Moffat struck early on to leave Galgate 20-1, which brought Dave Morgan to the crease. He struck an excellent 97, although wickets fell around him as Galgate reached 261-6 and declared when Morgan got out, caught behind off Alfie. This gave us two extra overs to use. Paul Moffat once again bowled well, taking 2-47/10.

262 seemed like a tough chase on paper, but we didn’t care. Myself and Jonty Moeckell opened the batting and started well with a partnership of 64, although I fell for a slightly more aggressive than usual 19, which brought Jack Dougan to the crease. Jonty reached 50 soon after my dismissal, but he didn’t stop there, smashing an imperious 92 in a partnership of 87 with Dougs, who struck a sublime 55. Jonty’s first four scoring shots were fours, and he bludgeoned thirteen fours and fives sixes and he blazed his way to the nervous nineties, and unfortunately got out to leave us 151-2, but Dougs continued the free run-scoring in a 30 run partnership with David Hones, who finally passed 10 runs with a quickfire 12. We lost a couple of quick wickets as we fell from 181-3 to 184-5, which left the chase teetering on a knife-edge. Step forward number 6 Jack Belcher. Jack went in at a tricky time and simply attacked, blasting his way to an unbeaten 44, including three huge sixes in one over. Number 7 David James also played a key role in a 7 over partnership of 59 with Belch, hitting a composed 20 before dragging on to leave us 243 for 6. Paul Moffat then joined the fray, with Silverdale needing 19 off 20 deliveries. Everyone was very nervous. After 40 overs we were precariously placed on 249-6 after a huge Moff six and another four by Belch. We needed 13 off two overs - which Galgate gave us by declaring in the 37th. Belch smashed the first ball of the penultimate over for 6, and the over ended up going for 10, to leave us needing 3 from 6. Moff had struck 11 by the this point and Jack decided he didn’t want to hang around and smashed another huge six from the first ball of the final over as we finished on 265-6, resulting in a tremendous 15 points for us.

A few more performances like that and we’ll comfortably avoid relegation - onwards and upwards, and Up the Dale!!!

N.B. We avoided relegation and are still in the 3rd div.
